Lantern and Stopgap Dance Company: Choreography workshop 2019.

In June we held a new choreography workshop with professional integrated dance companyStopgap Dance Co, in collaboration with DanceEast. It was led by David Willdridge, formerly a member of Stopgap. Our aim was to create a new piece for #Spiritus15, our summer concert. The result was Opening, which we performed at the event on 16th August.  It was a big success! There’s a clip of the new piece on the home page of this site

We’ve worked with Stopgap before. In 2014 we began work on new choreography with  Stopgap Dance as part of our Fenland Suite, a programme of five dance works made for the Isle of Ely Arts Festival.  Our collaboration was a first for both dance companies.  We ran a two day workshop in Ely led by Stopgap’s Creative Learning Manager Siobhan Hayes and Stopgap dancer Hannah Sampson, who has Down’s Syndrome.  Eighteen of our dancers worked for six hours each day to  generate the new dance material and make the new piece, titled Clear Space (The Grandeur of Architecture).

The theme was the architecture and atmosphere of Ely Cathedral.

We invited Stopgap back in 2015 to make a new work, Tall Tales and Short Stories, for the Isle of Ely Arts Festival.

We also performed Tall Tales and Short Stories in the studio theatre at Dance East in Ipswich.

Both commissions were funded by the Isel of Ely Arts Festival with support from Arts Council England. They really made a difference to the company’s development!
